Weather Underground - An IBM Business
Hyper-local forecasts, built from the ground up.
Weather Underground's flagship app turns data from 250,000+ personal weather stations into hyper-local forecasts you can't get anywhere else. We designed the iOS and Android experience from the ground up - as a universal app spanning iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch - and built the visual system that carried through to the website and brand.

The Challenge
Weather Underground needed a flagship app that could turn a genuinely unique asset, data from over 250,000 personal weather stations, into forecasts people actually trust and check daily. That meant building for iOS and Android natively rather than porting one to the other: strict adherence to Apple's Human Interface Guidelines on one side, Google's Material Design guidelines on the other, and a universal iOS build that had to feel native on iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch alike.
The Results
We designed the app from the ground up across both platforms, plus a landing page to launch it and the data visualizations that went on to define the broader Weather Underground brand and website. The app has been live in the Apple App Store since 2016, holds a 3.5-star rating, ranks #29 on the weather charts, and is published in over 30 languages.
